I have used a MacBook Pro since 2011 and have never had any issues with its glass trackpad. I was recently given a dead 2014 MacBook Air. I replaced the logic board and it is now working. However, one thing I noticed is that the Air's trackpad feels quite a bit different than that of the older Pro (significantly less smooth, almost feels as if it's metal and not glass). Is there an actual difference in material or coatings between trackpads on these models?

I think there is, a slight one
Macbook Airs had the same trackpad material, a certain metal with a thin coating of a polymer plastic.
There is a difference between the macbook air trackpad i have, and a Magic trackpad were the Air has some resistance.
im trying to remember the feel of a macbook pro from 2015 but there was not that much of a difference
I even just looked this up and could not find an answer if there were different.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, even Apple's own specifications for the 2014 MacBook Air do not mention the material of the trackpad. I thought I had once read about the older MacBook Air having a metal trackpad surface, which was changed to glass on the newer models.

I found an instance of someone asking a question similar to mine on Ask Different:
The answer there seems to indicate that all MacBook trackpads since 2008 are the same glass-on-metal design; however, I can tell a definite difference between my two MacBooks. I have to apply more pressure to the Air's trackpad for two finger scrolling, and its surface is louder when being used.

Even with the difference, I find that I do like the convenience of the small form factor. I never thought I could work with an 11" screen, but it's acceptable for most tasks... although I do use it with a resolution of 1152x648 so the text is the same size as that of my 15" MacBook Pro. ?
