I'm looking at getting a used 2014 Mac Mini i5 2.8 for my son and it comes stock with a Fusion drive. Now, my understanding is that it's really just a 128 GB SSD stick along with a separate 1 TB spinning drive and the "Fusion" is just a software thing to make it all look like a single drive to the OS.
If I get this for him, can't I just split the "Fusion" and basically have 2 separate drives show up on the Mac? The primary would be the 128 GB SSD stick for the OS and programs and then the secondary would be the 1 TB spinner for games and files? I'd think this is the preferred way to go anyway. Is there a downside I'm not thinking of? Heck, if needed, I could then even replace the 128 GB SSD stick with a larger capacity (but I think the 128 will be fine).
Thanks!
