2014 Thunderbolt RCA/MiniDV Convertor?

Hello,

I have a bunch of old Digital8 and MiniDV tapes that I would like to backup on external HDs using my new-ish iMac. Is there a recent thread with best practices/gear to accomplish this? Preferably I'd just hit play on my camcorder (with an old Firewire connection or with RCA cables to a converter) and save each tape as one big video file with little/no drop in quality.
