I currently have a 27" Dell 4K display that I run at 4K and 30Hz with my Mac mini. It looks sharp but all the desktop elements are really small, the menus are small and there is some cursor lag due to the 30Hz frequency I think. When I run it at 1080P and 60Hz, I have far less desktop real estate to play with, but otherwise the screen looks great. Anything in between those two resolutions looks blurry due to the scaling.
So:
1) is there anything I can do in System Settings or elsewhere to make the icons, menus etc. bigger at 4K?
2) If I bought a 24" monitor with QHD (2560 x 1440?) would that be a better compromise of screen real estate and slightly bigger icons etc.? Not sure I have enough space for two 27" monitors.

Incidentally I also use the monitor with a Surface Pro 3 and the Windows desktop scales to 4K well IMO.
