2015 MBP becomes unresponsive, including the trackpad

I have an early 2015 MBP:
3.1 GHz Intel Core i7
16 GB 1867 MHz DDR3
Intel Iris Graphics 6100 1536 MB
1TB SSD with 603GB available
Sierra 10.12.4

recently I have been doing lots of After Effects on it, and it could just be a coincidence, though I have had to cut the power to it at least once a day, 3 times today, over the past few days because everything locks up and the trackpad stops working, and it sounds like the SSD and fan are working hard inside. Is it not able to handle After Effects or is this just a coincidence?

Any idea what might be causing this and what I can do to remedy it?

With 16 GB RAM it should work fine,even if it might get a little warmed up. Do you have anything running in the background?
