Hey guys,

I'm currently a professional music producer and in market for a new powerful computer..

I just need a little help in choosing the best option for me as a music producer..

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Well, for music production, I would think a 27" iMac would be a better choice (because of the BIG display), but...
... chances are you're going to be sorry if you buy ANY MacBook Pro from 2017. Because they have the disastrous "butterfly keyboard" that is highly prone to failure. Apple has a 4-year extended warranty on keyboard failures for this model, but after four years, YOU will have to pay for the fix. And (for just one key), that fix is going to run about $750, because THE ENTIRE TOP CASE of the computer must be replaced (even for just one key).

So.. my "buying guide" for MacBook Pros:
DO NOT BUY:
MacBook Pro 13" from 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019
MacBook Pro 15" from 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019

DO BUY:
MacBook Pro 16" from 2019 or later
MacBook Pro 13" from 2020
MacBook Pro, 15" or 13" from 2015 (or earlier).
Those on the "do buy" list have the much-improved "scissors" keyboard that won't fail as do the butterfly keyboards.

OK, that's my tune, and I ain't changin' it..!

Haha! i love your response man! That was my main concern cause I'm seeing so many people complaining about the keyboards.

I heard the 2015 is a really good buy as well.

I appreciate your reply man!

2015 MBP is solid, but it's far too old. You would need a battery replacement and you would have to hope it doesn't have any serious issues. These are harder and harder to find today.

I'm using 2020 13" MBP for music production. This feels weird but here is a track I made entirely on this machine. I've got the 10th gen i5 / 16gb ram variant. An i7/32ram will would be even better if you can spare the cash.

If you have NO other options and must buy second hand, then you need to get lucky with a very well-preserved 2015 MBP with MAXIMUM specs from the time, or risk it and get refurbished models from 2016-2019, as the 2020 models are still very new. Yeah, the keyboard might fail, but it might not if you keep it clean. I would still avoid butterfly keyboards if I can. Also keep in mind a 5 year-old better-designed keyboard is still a 5 year-old keyboard.

Oh. And you might not like this, but with a low budget you will be better-off with a cheaper Windows laptop. Just laying down the facts. It will give you better bang for the buck at the cost of worse design and obviously, having to use Windows.

Keep in mind Catalina models (2020) no longer support 32 bit and cannot roll back to Mojave properly. This means forget 32 bit plugins if you buy them. I can kind of live with that but some cannot and I understand them.

Right.. That was my thinking as well man..

Okay, so how about the 2019 MBP..

I heard these are realy good as well but the thermals on those things aren't the best.

If you connect them to external monitors then yeah, the 2019 16" can easily get very noisy because the additional GPU draws a lot more power for some inexplicable reason. That's bad design quite frankly, since you do not need the Radeon's graphics to run monitors. People run multiple 4K monitors with Intel Iris on 13" macbooks and it doesn't get so noisy.

Anyway, if you plan to use it "as a laptop" without extra monitors then it could be a very good machine for music. The 16" screen is pretty big anyway. I have set up one 1080p monitor to go along with my 13" mbp and it's silent most of the time. My gf runs two 2K monitors in parallel on her 2016 13" and it also doesn't get noisy. But when she connects the 16" to the same 2K monitors it goes into jet mode...

Wow that's crazy. I do actually plan on having it connected to a monitor or two later on but I don't think that may be too big of an issue for me.

I see producers praising this thing all over Youtube so I think I may want to give it a try.

Well, you can read about it here: https://forums.macrumors.com/thread....2211747/page-172?post=29145851#post-29145851

It's only a 170 page thread 😅

Maybe there is some solution already, I haven't been following it recently.
