I have a 2015 retina MacBook, with a USB-C to USB-C & USB-A dongle.
I also have an Apple USB DVD drive.

So you'd think I could plug in the DVD drive to the dongle & read optical disks on the Mac. But no, it seems not - I guess the dongle isn't powering the USB-A socket?

I also have a powered USB hub, so I plugged it into there, but still no joy.

Any hints as to how I'm going to read optical disks on my MacBook?

Many thanks

I have a 2015 Macbook as well. I haven't tried our my Apple USB DVD drive, but I just plugged it into the Macbook HDMI connector (not sure of the official name, but the one with the HDMI/ USB A & USB-C ports) and my DVD Drive worked fine. It took a second to power up once I put the disc in, but it read it just fine.

that's interesting. I have to try this. Alternatively you could use another computer's disc drive via WiFi (PC and Mac). Will report back with my findings.

The $79 Apple and $19 adapter works without external power. See pic.
