2016 MacBook Pro clamshell AirPods audio cut out and bluetooth issues

Hey

I have a 2016 15" MacBook Pro and use it in clamshell mode hooked to an external monitor and connected to my AirPods Pro. Sometimes I will have the audio on my AirPods Pro cut in and out. This happens no matter what I'm listening to (Apple Music, YouTube, etc.). It doesn't seem to happen when the AirPods are connected to my iPhone and I can't recall if it happens at all when I'm using the MacBook open, not in clamshell mode.

What could be the issue here? Big Sur? My MacBook? AirPods?
