On my 2014 Mac Mini desktop, I am using Apple's Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter
http://www.apple.com/shop/product/MB571LL/A/mini-displayport-to-dual-link-dvi-adapter
to get 2560x1440 resolution on my 27" Asus monitor. The mDP on the adapter is plugged into the TB2 port on the Mac Mini.

Obviously I can't plug that Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter directly into my 2016 MacBook Pro TB's TB3 USB-C ports. The USB end would work fine with my Apple USBC-USBA adapter. But mDP does not work using Apple's TB3-TB2 adapter in the MBP's USBC ports. Anyone found a fix? Thanks.

I use a USB-C to Display Port adapter (not miniDP), and then connect via a display port cable. Not sure if your monitor supports that... DP can achieve that resolution without a similar converter/hub thing needed for dual-link DVI. It does need to be 4K though.

This is the one I bought which works well for me running that resolution on my 15" MBP w/ TB.
