I read a few months ago that an Apple exec acknowledged that transitioning suddenly to an all 4 USB-C port was too fast.

I think what Apple could have done was offer the 2016 Macbook Pro with two USB-C ports and two old style USB 3 ports to make the transition less jarring. Like what they did with 2017 iMac Pro.

Transitioning from 1 port technology to a different one with an overlap has been done by Apple before.

From Firewire 400 to Firewire 800 had both ports present on specific year Macs and from Firewire 800 to Thunderbolt 1 also had both ports present on specific year Macs.

I could not find a Firewire 800 port & USB 3 port present on 1 single Mac model though.

A all Thunderbolt 3 would have made more sense in say 2019 or 2022?

I think a 2xUSB-C + 2xUSB-A for current 4xUSB-C MBP's would only make sense with a separate power port.

Without looking it up, I know the 2012 Mini and the 2012 non-Retina MBP (at least the 13" model) have both USB3 and Firewire 800 since I have both those computers.

Just buy a $5 dongle or three.

My complaint is not the USB-C. My complaint is the single USB-C port on the MacBook, and the dual USB-C ports on the MacBook Pro non-Touch Bar, since Apple uses USB-C for charging as well. IMO, the non-TB MacBook Pro would benefit from 3 USB-C ports, and the 12" MacBook definitely needs 2 USB-C ports.

BTW, it's not just the iMac Pro. The regular iMacs also have regular USB-A.

Never heard anything like that.

What they should have done is throw in a high-quality hub for free and make sure that there are good, reasonably priced selection of hubs, adapters and cables on the market.

I don't mind the shift to a new format, but 2 adapters included would have been nice.
I actually think the other manufactures are moving to slowly with adopting usb-c
