I have a 15 inch MacBook Pro from 2016, i7 2.6ghz, 16gb,512gb,Radeon Pro 460, 15 battery cycles.
both the screen and body module where replaced in 2019 after I had been annoying Apple long enough about crackling noises when opening the lid and sometimes during operation. They did it for free, no AppleCare. Thanks to Apple at this point.

anyway, I haven’t really used it since and bought the new 14 inch model. I’m now wondering if I should give the 2016 to my sister for the 430 Euro I would get from Apple as a trade-in as she wants a Mac or just sell it. I’m kinda scared that the keyboard or other parts might be acting up and I’ll regret not having it passed on (at least to Apple, I chose the option to return it with the 14 inch). In general I never got warm with the 2016 model And feel like it’s very defect prone.

whats your opinion?

I see $620 trade-in value on Apple USA website. Give your sister the option: take the MBP (with its attendant risks, or sell it herself) or $620 towards a Mac.

Sorry guys, I forgot to mention that I’d give it to her for the value of the Apple Trade in since that’s way less than it would cost if she bought it elsewhere

Not sure why you wouldn't sell it for market price. You should be able to easily get 600 to 700 Euro.

I don’t care much for the 270 Euros difference if my sister will be happy with it. the thing is that I’m not sure if I’d go for the 2016 mbp myself. Sure, considering the price it’s kind of a steal. But from my experience, that model is not nearly as reliable as the previous models. Should the keyboard or display break anytime soon - as those seem to be very common defects that come out of the blue - I’ll Be biting my ass over not having done a trade in and give the problem back to Apple. Maybe my fear of the possibility that the 2016 could be breaking is way too high though. Thats why I’m asking for the opinion. Was it a 2013 model, i wouldn’t worry at all.

Ah, that makes more sense.
The butterfly keyboard is the known issue.

I usually trade in because it is easy and I don't want to deal with the hassle of selling and (sometimes) idiots or scammers. But selling obviously gets more money and many people do not consider selling a big hassle at all.

I would not want to offload something onto my sister that I thought might shortly fail. However, I suppose give her the choice: she may be disappointed that you didn't give her the option. Just would have to be very clear that you are getting rid of it asap before it fails as it is likely to do so, but if she wants to take a chance she can. Something like that

Flexgate, staingate, and butterfly keyboard. Personally, there’s no way I’d risk giving it or selling it to someone I know.

If you're going to make your sister PAY for the MBP, then DON'T "give it" to her.
You'll be passing off the potential problems to HER.

Instead, sell it outright or get a trade-in deal on it...

I would normally say just gift it to your family member. But, considering the model you are talking about, I would not gift it to even someone you dislike. There are too many known problems that threaten its long term durability. Better to take the money and run. IMHO
