Never experienced this before but am guessing this is not normal...

Anyone have experience of dealing with Apple (UK) on this?

That's --- bad! Whatever you decide to do, don't plug it in to charge, or attempt to turn it on. Swelling batteries that burst do NOT create a good day for you...
You should call AppleCare support. See what they tell you. Let them do the replacement (if they will do that)
Replacing the batteries without puncturing will be challenging, and you don't want to accidentally rip a hole in one of the cells. This is not a DIY job.

Call Apple Support RIGHT AWAY.
Send them the pic you posted above if necessary.

They should send you a prepaid shipping box to return it to them.
They'll replace the battery and send it back to you.

It may be free for a 2017, or... it may not.
But even if they make you pay, it's only $200 (US).
WORTH the money.

Badly swollen batteries like you have are a fire and explosion hazard, as mentioned above.

Lappy was purchased new in Feb 2018.

Called Apple and basically they are not interested as they are closed in the UK due to the current pandemic. Have been advised to contact an authorised 3rd party for a mail-in diagnosis.

Try again.
Explain that you don't want to visit an Apple Store, but that you'd like to mail it in for repair.
This is common in the USA... you mean you don't have it over there?

Apple Stores are all closed over here (UK) at the moment and it seems Apple is farming all “issues” out to authorised third parties / repair centres, via a “collection” service given the current situation. I did call back to further explain the situation as personally I cannot keep this laptop in the house until someone collects it and indeed don’t understand how someone could in-fact collect it given that it could go pop at anytime / is a fire risk. AppleCare, or whatever the phone number is called, did not seem to care.

Just thought to post a followup to my swollen battery. Apple did not care one bit while closed / on lockdown here in the UK, and all authorised 3rd parties were fully booked bar one which wanted to charge a diagnostic fee and would also not accept a mail in. As they were on the other side of London I had no option but to store the problem MBP and wait for Apple to open again. I also purchased a new 16" BTO so I could get up and running again, nice machine and I wanted one but was waiting on a refresh to be honest. Anyway, Apple opened again and I took the problem MBP in, shaved monkey took one look at it, booked it in and after 5 working days all was fixed with no charge to myself.

Amazingly poor service while on lockdown but pleasantly surprised that I did not need to argue for a cost free repair, which is the norm with any repair when dealing with Apple Store Brent Cross, London.
