So last night I was watching the MLB Allstar game on the YouTube tv FOX4K channel but I wasn't getting it in 4k.. I reached out to YouTube tv support and was told its only available on the new 2021 Apple 4K. but I am in a few Facebook YTTV groups and some with the original 4K said they were indeed getting it in 4K. I have now googled it and it does state its only compatable with the 2021 4K box?? anyone have anything on this??

It's because the ATV 4K 2nd gen supports the proprietary VP9 codec and the ATV 4K 1st gen does not.

Yes I understand that, but there were people in the YTTV FB groups that were getting 4K resolution with the first generation 4K, they posted the Nerd stats that showed this, so I am confused

I'm confused as well. According to Google, it shouldn't work. Perhaps those people were using the YouTube app and not YTTV?

That’s not correct, the 1st gen does support VP9, Stats for Nerds proves that on 4K videos.
What the 1st gen doesn’t support is 4K videos above 30fps and HDR.

That is correct, the ATV 4K 2017 can show 4K @ 30fps YT videos, but not HDR. To watch YT 4K videos with HDR I have to watch them either in my Sony Bravia‘s Android TV YT app or my Fire TV Cube YT app. It is not worth buying the 2021 model just to get YT 4K with HDR when I can watch it on other devices I already own. No doubt Apple could update the 2017 model via FW, but the cheapskates probably never will.

ETA: Oops just realized OP was referring to YTTV. I don’t use that app so no clue. I only use YT app. But on YT app HDR is not available with my ATV 4K 2017.

Some YTTV VOD that is 4K is actually 4K@30 so it will work on the 1st gen Apple TV 4K. Since all of the live channels are 60fps, the 1st gen Apple TV 4K is limited to 1440p@60 for any live content.

Is that for YouTube or YouTube TV? Not the same apps. I can’t find it now, but I read an article that said the 2021 ATV was required for YouTube TV because of support for VP9.

Oh my apologies, yes was meaning YouTube.
If I’m honest I didn’t even know there was a YouTube TV app 😳
I’m guessing that YouTube TV is just a US thing?

I watched a couple eps of Jeremy Wade's Mighty Rivers last night and the resolution was, I believe, 3840 × 2160 @30. The eps looked good.
