I have just purchased a used 2017 4k 21.5 iMac, there are some scratches on the screen and I'd like to resolve them somehow.

So far I have called Apple who have quoted £470 to replace the screen - I guess they won't just do the glass? I'm not paying that much.

I have come across matte and glossy screen protectors which may mask the scratches but I wonder if I will lose some visual clarity from that lovely 4k display?

I've done some reading around and as far as I can see you cant just 'polish them out'.

I'm all ears, open to any thoughts/suggestions.

"just purchased?" why non return for defect. ?
My 2017 still using the plastic screen.

even so it might have warranty if 3 year period.. just check it out first.. else paid them dearly ..
Warranty's don't generally cover cosmetic damage. I bought it knowing it had a scratch so its not an issue, but if I can improve it in any way I'd like to :)

You can't really improve scratched glass. It's not like you can buff it out like plastic. You can only replace it.

If it's used, there's generally "no warranty".
What you bought is.... what you get.

Did you KNOW ABOUT the scratches before you bought it?

You have two choices:
- Live with the scratches
or
- Replace the display. Could be costly if you don't want to try yourself (not recommended).

Well with Apple, warranties usually go with the device/serial number, so there is a reasonable chance that a 2017 may still be under warranty, and an even smaller chance that if the iMac is over one-year old the original owner purchased AppleCare. It's worth a check with Apple's warranty site.

Apple can't just replace the glass on the display anymore. On newer iMacs, the LCD panel and glass front are fused together, so that's why it costs so much to replace it.

How bad is the scratch? Will you notice it when you turn it on?

Sometimes small scratches are in the coatings of the screen. My iMac Pro shipped with small scratches in the screen coatings that appear if I shine a bright light on them. I didn't send the computer back because the screen uniformity was spot on, and the rest of the computer didn't have any issues. I also don't see the scratches when the screen is up and running, or even in normal lighting conditions when the screen is off.
