Hello MR Forum, I just upgraded to a 15" macbook pro 2017 model and need advice finding a 1TB internal SSD harddrive. I work with audio programs/DAWs and plugins and am struggling to even load many because the factory 250gb drive just isnt enough. i have searched online but there are so many options and a lot of them don't explicitly say they are for my mac. Any links, models, manufacturers, sellers, etc. would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Model Name: MacBook Pro
Model Identifier: MacBookPro14,3
Processor Name: Quad-Core Intel Core i7
Processor Speed: 2.8 GHz
Number of Processors: 1
Total Number of Cores: 4
L2 Cache (per Core): 256 KB
L3 Cache: 6 MB
Hyper-Threading Technology: Enabled
Memory: 16 GB

You cannot upgrade the drive in a 2017 MacBook Pro. The drive is soldered to the logic board, and controlled by the T2 chip.

Your only option is to buy one with a 1 TB drive.

what about an external USB-C SSD drive ? If you can't upgrade the built in SSD and need storage that's one way to go and it will still be useful when you change the MacBook later.

I got a samsung 2TB external but i'm having trouble with some VST plugins that want to be on the internal drive but are also 5-35gb in size.

Yes. Starting with the 2016 models, Apple made it impossible to upgrade anything in an MBP - RAM, storage, etc. They also added the absurd touchbar, made it USB-C only, reduced the battery size, crippled it with an unreliable and dreadful keyboard, etc. There are lots of them out there, but that's because there was so much pent-up demand for a new MBP - the 2015 models were using much older tech.

Yeah, it's a bummer... all MacBooks since around 2016 (with the exception of the non-touchbar 13") have soldered SSDs that cannot be upgraded or swapped out later. Even if the drive fails, the entire logic board needs to be replaced.
