1. Does this happen often?
2. Does Apple replace the entire unit or just the top case?

I’m still showing 93% capacity - yet the service battery was displayed... i find that odd. Apple was quick to replace... bigger issue at play?

Anyone else have this type of situation? (I do have AppleCare)

They usually do a top case replacement since the top case parts (battery, keyboard, Al handrest, and trackpad) are glued and riveted together. But, if they have a spare unit available they might just swap to avoid you having to wait for your unit to be shipped to the repair depot, repaired, and then shipped back.

If you have AppleCare, it is no brainer. System is saying battery is bad, they have to replace it. They will replace at least the top case. AppleCare paid for itself by now.
Thanks to this genius "top case" design, if you have keyboard fail (for which warranty was extended for everyone), you also get new battery for free as part of the repair.
