as mentioned I have a 2017 13" MacBook Pro. It is my moms and there is an issue with the hard drive. It tries to boot up and goes into kernel panic. I boot into recovery and run first aid and all says ok. Still boots into a kernel panic. Tried target dick mode and no luck. Tried mounting the hard drive via terminal and no luck. I have a new M4 MacBook Air for my mom but was hoping to do a target disk mode transfer. Anything else I can try to get this hard drive to mount? I do have a cloud back up but that is more manual restoring that I would like to avoid if possible.

Sometimes one just has to do... what one has to do... to "get to where you want to be".

Is there a brick n mortar Apple Store anywhere close?
If there is, make an appt for the genius bar and bring in BOTH old and new MacBooks.
They may be willing to "do the transfer" for you.

I manually did all the transferring. Even just scheduling with Apple takes a while, at least getting an appointment. My mom has a shiny new M4 MacBook Air which is a pretty big upgrade from the 2017 MacBook Pro. Only thing I think she will really notice will be the battery. Funny enough the MacBook Air of today is the same thickness of the MacBook Pro of 2017.
