2017 MBP Dead as Doornail, except power connection chime?

I'm confused by what I'm looking at here. I have a laptop that shows zero sign of life whatsoever, except when I plug in the power cable into the USB C ports, the system makes a "charging" audio chime. Sure seems like a live computer, then? But what to do to bring it back to life? I've reset the SMC, and after the 10 second key hold, the system did the same power connection chime, but still no sign of life of any kind otherwise. Any suggestions?

Have you tried attaching another monitor to the device? You may have a fried graphics card.
Try booting into recover mode, Command + R on startup/restart.
Is the Fan running?

That thought did occur to me, but I don't have a USB-C to video adapter to try. Guess I should get my hands on one of those.

The fan is not audible, but on this model, is it ever?
