I had a 2017 MB Pro non-TB in 2017 when they were new and now have a 2017 model again.

I've noticed that using both the HP USB-C to External Display adapter (basically a copy of Apple's adapter) and a cheap multi-port adapter from eBay results in sometimes the Mac not picking up the display, or sometimes changing the resolution on the Mac's display but not waking the monitor at all...

I upgraded to a 2018 TouchBar model at the end of 2018 which I returned, it had the four ports and never suffered this issue - ever - using the same hardware and peripherals. It was flawless.

Have any of you with the non-TB model ever noticed this issue? I was thinking it was a defect of my particular machine but it seems to be the lower end two port models.

It's a real shame.

I have the 2017 nTB Pro. I occasionally use my monitors that are attached to my desktop with the MacBook Pro, with the Satechi multiport USB C adapter I haven’t encountered that issue.

Are you by any chance also running an eGPU?

I'm not running an eGPU. Perhaps my issue is HP's poor quality adapter and, less surprisingly, the eBay adapter being poor. Though they were fine on the more powerful quad-core machine.

I am in the market for a small Thunderbolt powered dock so maybe that'll improve the situation.

I have had a 2016 nTB MBP since launch and never experienced this issue with various USB-C adapters I've used (Apple's HDMI adapter; HooToo USB-C hub; iKling USB-C hub). I did have a problem eventually with the HooToo hub in that it stopped delivering power when plugged in to the MBP power adapter. I replaced it with the iKling hub which has worked fine. The Apple adapters never gave me any problems either. Right now I'm working from home and have my MBP set up to a 23" HP monitor via my eGPU and it is working flawlessly.

Perhaps it's an issue with the adapter you are using?
