I have a 2017 Retina MacBook Pro running the latest version of macOS Big Sur and for the past several months, I think even before updating to Big Sur, when I go to the Apple icon in the menu bar and select Restart, the whole OS becomes unresponsive and freezes and the computer never actually restarts.
Every time this happens, I have to undock my MacBook (as I run it clamshell'd) and then press and hold the TouchID/power button until it forcefully shuts down. This seems to happen almost every time I restart my Mac.
I've tried reseting the NVRAM and running first aid on the internal drives from recovery mode but that's fixed nothing. Has anyone else had a similar issue? What is the fix? I feel like if I call Apple they'll just tell me to reinstall the OS which I don't want to do right now.
