2018 13”MBP Quad Core & DGPU??

Hi,

Anybody think the 2018 MacBook Pro 13” will have the option of a quad core processor and dedicated graphics?

Tried and tried with a 2017 15” MBP but it’s just too big and heavy for what I want. The 13” is a perfect size and weight for me but doing video editing I need more graphical power and a quad core wouldn’t go amiss.

Don’t know why Apple doesn’t offer this as a friend has the new Surface Book 2 13” with the dedicated Nvidia 1050 and it runs perfect.

I don’t really want to go the Windows route if I’m honest but it’s looking more attractive by the day by at least having options.

There will be quadcore CPU and Intel Iris Pro 655 (see the Iris Pro 650, the 655 is only slightly quicker version with twice the eDRAM (64 MB vs 128 MB).

They could always make the 13" with dGPU more expensive than the base 15".

Shame that. Will make more and more people look elsewhere to fill their needs when you have Surfacebook/XPS13 amongst many more offering that.

I use FCPX and Resolve and could switch to Resolve full time easily.

In a nutshell: Surface Book 2 is actually larger then the 15" MBP when you look at the volume, and its 50% larger then the 13" MBP. Thats how they can fit a dGPU there...

The only possibility real we get a dGPU in the 13" MBP is if Apple uses Kaby Lake G. They'd have to use a custom config of it though (at around 30 Watt TDP), or completely redesign the chassis and make it larger.

Gutter. Using FCPX it’s actually not that bad with 4K footage but it’s when you add corrections, luts, things like that, that I find drags the system. Used a 2016 MBP13 and it was painful when using corrections etc

You need a bigger heavier laptop to do that work it’s that simple you chose they wrong tool for the job because you prioritised the size and or the cost over the performance you needed. The technology is getting there but there are still huge computing compromises in portable computers and that’s not going away anytime soon.

The surfacebook 2 13” is hardly bigger than the MBP 13 and crunches it’s way through 4K. Nowt to do with the size and weight it’s just apple doesn’t offer that config. I know why they don’t as they want the extra revenue from the 15” but to state “we want to make the best computers in the world” I think they should offer it. I’m living proof that I may abandon Apple and it’s services (MacBook, iCloud 2tb plan, apps etc) solely as I want something small and powerful.

And that’s your choice but Microsoft made some compromises to put in a 1050 dGPU mainly that the cpu throttles back up 25% when it’s in use.

The surfacebook is closer to the 15 inch mbp in size and weight.

Sure if those are the portable compromises you want to make then go ahead get the surfacebook 2. That’s what choice is all about.

However Apple have an obligation to make the compromises they think is the best for their customers and so do Microsoft.

Some people will swap away from macs because of this some will swap to macs because of this that’s fine as far as i’m Concerned it’s annoying enough that mobile manufacturers are making poor IPhone clones at least the pc makers are providing some choice. Apple makes the choices that are best for me, microsoft don’t, I therefore buy Apple, when they don’t i’ll buy something else.

The surface book 2 (13.5") is actually bigger then the 15" MBP, if you look at the volume. I tried them side by side, and couldn't get the surface book into my compact backpack — too thick. From size alone, the 15" MBP is 4cm longer (and slimmer) — thats it.

And it occupies significantly more space then the 13" MBP...
