Hello guys,

I've got my first MBP (2018 15") 2 days ago and found something strange when it is being charged via Ultrafine 4K.
It is occurred when MBP is ABSOLUTELY out of battery, as 'plug your charger' animation is not showing for any key presses.

- Plugged Ultrafine 4K (60W)
. sounds 'ding'.
. no response for power button, even it has been plugged for 30+ minutes.
. after MBP is revived by default adapter and charged a little, it can be charged via Ultrafine 4K.

- Plugged default adapter (87W)
. sounds 'ding'.
. powered on instantly for power button. no waiting for being minimum charged.
. shows 'No battery installed / No charging' when it is just booted (screenshot attached). to change its status normal (=> 'Battery Installed / Charging 0% 1% ...'), need to wait some (10+?) minutes.

Questions are,
1. Is it normal that low power inputs (60W) can't charge MBP (87W) when it is zero battery?
2. Is it normal that battery status is shown 'No Battery / No Charging' when it is just powered on via AC adapter, from zero battery?

I tried SMC reset but no joy.

Is there anybody who experienced this or similar situation?
I want to know whether this is abnormal or not to determine returning this machine.

Thanks for reading.

Thanks for your opinion. I agree with you for general usage. However, this is the case that the laptop is powered off due to out of battery. I think it should be charged, even charger has low capacity, since the machine drains no power at that time. (input > usage)

Anyway, I decided to return MBP. It can't be charged even by default AC adapter sometimes. Hope next one to be fine...

It will be exactly the same.

I ordered MBP again and it is arrived. Everything is fine while charging via Ultrafine, even from absolutely out of battery as I expected. It seems that the first one might have a problem on its battery.

However, there is a difference between two MBPs about battery manufacturer. First one was DSY, and new one is SMP.
I know that this couldn't be due to specific manufacturer, just for your information.

Hope no more problems.
