Hey, I'm noticing my trusty MBP gets lethargic and super slow when the lid is closed, a practice I started just recently. Once the lid is up it goes back to normal pretty much, fast and no fuss about anything, fan noise I a rarity. Is this a clue for me to do do the new thermal paste? Kind of dreading it on this machine, although done it on many others, but mostly older Macs.

2018 15 MBP heating issues in clamshell mode

I had this a few months back. For me, because of where I had my MBP (in calmshell) it was just sucking up dust like a hoover.
I opened the case up, grabbed an actual hoover and I've never had an issue since. Hopefully this is your issue too... removing the case is a little fiddly if you don't watch a YouTube video on how to do it first.
