2018 Mac mini Music Out Via HDMI

Hello and thanks in advance for any replies.
With regard the Mac mini 2018, is it possible to play Hi Res Audio files via HDMI to my AV Receiver.
Or would it be better to play via USB

There are "splitters" which will separate the audio signal from the HDMI video signal.
You can then route the audio as needed. They're quite cheap.

I've never used one, don't know anything more about them... you'll have to do the research.
