The 3 year old MacBook Pro I just migrated from had a feature that just by plugging in an external headset I could use it to hear and talk without having to do anything else, which was perfect for running web meetings. Did they remove that on the MacBook Pro 2018 or do I have to turn on some option to make it work? Or does it require a special Apple Headset or something?

Whoops, this appears to be a feature of WebEx, that it doesn't automatically recognize a headset. Problem solved. I just have to remember to turn on external mic and speaker every time I use WebEx I guess? But why on this Mac and not the previous one? Hmmmm...

I wish I had an answer for you. I have a Bluetooth headset, so I have become accustomed to having to go into Bluetooth settings to connect mine.

I am not sure what would have changed between 2015 and 2018 that would cause the difference other than maybe it is because the T2 chip in the 2018 models handles audio control? I am not certain.

I assume you are enabling it using the option-click shortcut on the volume indicator in the menu bar and not going into system preferences every time. So hopefully the new method isn't too annoying for you.
