Dear all,

I am now at my wits end and you guys and gals are my last hope.

I have a 2018 macbook pro and an Audio Research integrated amplifier. We also have a family 2020 MacBook air. The Air recognises the DAC no problem - see attached. The pro just refuses to, that is, it does not appear in 'sound' as an output device - see attached. The connection is USB B to USB C.

The pro has been taken to the repair shop and new USB ports were installed as I thought this might be the issue, but still no luck. The pro recognises other USB devices fine, such as external hard drives. I have tried the usual suggested fixes such as reseting SMC and PRAM, but no luck at all. I have examined the USB Tree to see if any information can be gleaned from this, but from what I can see nothing changes in terms of what is displayed on either machine when any USB device is attached, which I thought it might.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what might be causing this issue and how I might identify/troubleshoot the problem or narrow it down? The only thing I can think of is the different chip sets used in the pro and the air, or some other problem with my MacBook pro. But this latter issue does not seem to fit either as e.g. printers show up as an external USB device on my MacBook pro. I am totally confused.

I will contact Audio Research again to see what they say, but they may quite reasonably say that the issue is with the pro as their DAC is detected just fine with Air.

Both machines are using the same and latest Apple OS.

All ideas most welcome.

Best regards,

James
