Hi everyone. I am trying to determine which machines would be suitable candidates for my workflow, so I have created this thread with hopes to pool tests from members with the latest MBP's after Apples patch has been applied. I am not a video editor, so many of the benchmark tests are not relevant to my workflow and make it difficult to judge how the machines perform with a 3d oriented use. As a game artist, baking light in a game engine is one of the most CPU intensive tasks, (aside from other rendering which we cannot replicate here).

All models are welcome for 2018 13"/15" respectively. Please post your results with the Intel Gadget, build times, and machine specs.

To anyone who takes the time to participate in this thread, I would like to thank you.

If it is your first time installing the engine, it will take a few moments for the project to build. This is normal.

https://www.unrealengine.com to download

Follow these steps, your interface might look a bit different than mine since I am showing you from Windows 10.

Click the Learn Tab and scroll to the bottom (or search) for the Project called Realistic Rendering.

Once you select it, you will be brought to the next page where you can create the project.

Once you have assigned the project to your directory, you can start it by finding the project in your Library tab.

After the project has loaded, click the arrow next to build, select Lighting Quality and then select Production. After that click Build Lighting Only and while that bakes you can record your CPU for throttling.

After that, there is another test you can do which will probably take a few moments longer. On the right hand side you should have 2 tabs, Details and World Settings. Click World Settings, and open the Lightmass Settings dropdown, change Static Lighting Level Scale to .1 and then Build Lighting once again and see if this throttles.

Haha I was going to do it but it's taking a while to download this and that. I will do it tomorrow morning when I get to work. It's nearly 2am here in Hong Kong.

Great, thanks! Look forward to your results. Hopefully other members will pitch in =)

Haha! I lied that I was gonna sleep. Well, I was going to but I didn't. SOOOOO, I did the test. And no it didn't throttle and actually stayed around the 3.5-4GHZ mark. It took 21.19 seconds. As for the second test...I couldn't find it.

i9, 32gb RAM, 560X, 1TB

EDIT: I missed an important part in which I was supposed to put it in production. Haha. I’ll do it tomorrow. As I’m in bed typing this on my phone!

1st Test - 2min 10 secs (didn't get a power Gadget screenshot)
2nd Test - 1min 50 secs

I have no idea if I made a mistake somewhere, but that is what I got based on the directions. Just kept doing Build Lighting Only over and over.

Awesome! Did you try the secondary test where the static lighting level scale was changed? If so, which test is it?

Hopefully we can get some i7s and 13" MBP's in here ;)

one also really should list ambient temperature when doing benchmarks, too. Second run of mine on a quick test just took 2:57, and cpu speed dropped quite low halfway through looking more like the 4th run from rthis in terms of cpu graph. Didn't time first as I didn't realise it wouldn't give it's own timing. Does this test hit gpu aswell or just cpu?

I presume it hits gpu a fair bit just from rendering the preview window if nothing else.

( i7 2.6 , ambient 25c or so)

Mostly a CPU test. Thanks for the benchmark. Did you run the second test as well? Or just the first test?

Did you ever have time to continue testing this?
