Picked up a 2018 MB Air a few days ago. Very pleased with it. Works like a charm with my LG UltraFine 4K USB-C 21-inch monitor. But when I plug it in to a 27-inch Thunderbolt Display -- which still works with an ancient 2012 MB Air -- using Apple's pricey Thunderbolt 3-to-2 adapter, it doesn't work. Nothing on the big screen. I need to use it with both monitors at different locations.

I've tried all combinations of plugging, unplugging, restarting, etc. Am I missing something? The new Air and the old monitor are meant to play together according to Apple.

Maybe the adapter is faulty. Or maybe the MB Air is. I really don't want to swap out the Air if I don't have to. Seems perfect in all respects and I'm pleasantly surprised how bright my screen is compared with some user reports.

I don’t know why it doesn’t work but I am curious/ Do you have these in two different workstation locations?

Yes, two different places. I'm not trying to create a dual-monitor set-up at the same place.
