This is probably a stupid question so forgive me...top of the line MBP 15". Ran GeekBench and the scores for the current MBP were SOOOOOO much lower than 4 years ago iMac, I was a bit shocked. 22K-ish for the MBP vs. 88K for the ancient iMac. Does that seem right?

Hello!
You more than likely tested the iGPU (Intel 630) instead of the actual dGPU. Make sure to switch it to the Radeon Pro 550X or 560X. Scores should be between 50k~60k.

Okay, you're totally right. But still, 88K for a 4 year old GPU vs this new one. That is not awesome.

True. This new GPU is supposed to be a low to midrange dGPU with a 35W limit. If what I remember from the old GPU, that one is a much higher end and has a larger power limit, capable of outputting more performance.

You are comparing a beefy 100 watt GPU to a newer power-optimized low-mid-range 35Watt GPU. The newer one is more Leser-efficient but it’s of course not enough to beat the much larger old one. A high-end gaming desktop of 4-5 years age will also outperform current mid-range gaming laptop. I think your expectations of tech advancement are a bit unrealistic.

is like comparing an 4 year old DSLR with a current smartphone camera
physics..

There’s a reason we still dont have discreet graphics in the 13” MBP. GPU’s haven’t seemingly been a great selling point of apple laptops recently and while they are certainly efficient, expectations should reflect size and power consumption. I use vector works (similar to autocad) which relies heavily on the GPU for simple panning/zoom tasks. And my 2014 iMac at the office does handle day to day usage better than my 2017 MBP. I dont mean to under sell MBP’s capabilities, but in comparing them to desk top class graphics cards, even 4 year old iMac’s will out perform mobile cards in the current mac line up. (In my experience which is admittedly only based on my usage and not any sort of tech expertise).
