Hello guys,

I need your help to make my decision to choose one of them. This is my first ever MacBook.

1. I purchased the 2018 MBP 15" (i7 2.6/16gb/512/560x) for $2519 and I'm currently being using this now.
2. I was able to get the 2018 MBP 15" base model (i7 2.2/16gb/256/555x) for $2009 only. I did not open it yet.

I cannot upgrade any options in the above 2 models. This will be my first ever apple Macbook. This will be used for regular uses. I'm a photo hobbyist and i will be using this for light editing of photos & videos using Lightroom, Photoshop CC. I shoot RAW files so planning to get an external SSD as well.

My questions:

Would you choose the base model & save $510 or keep the mid-model for the higher storage & slightly better CPU paying extra $510 ?

MBP costs a lot and this savings of $510 really helps to cut down the cost for me? On other side I have to live with 256 GB storage if I want to save $510 going to base model.

Decision.. Decision !!!!! Need your input guys.

I went with 2.2/16gb/512/555x for $2449. I'm also a photo hobbyist. For me, I wanted to save the extra money to purchase a new backpack, external ssd, and some other accessories. I've been using this laptop for a couple of weeks now it is perfect for my use. No slow downs, EVER. My 42mp files export tremendously fast from Lightroom. Working with photoshop side by side with Lightroom is a breeze. Save the extra cash, pick up a new lens for your camera or something.

Really depends on you and how much you value the storage. Personally as you said you do photos, I'd suggest you stick with the 512GB, however it largely depends on the quantity and size of these photos. I like to have enough 'working' space on my internal drive, so if I'm editing 100GB of photos I need at least 150GB of free space. If having 256GB means I need to work from an external drive, then I would pick the internal drive. I use 512GB drives as this gives me ample room, I'd use 1TB if I could but the cost is pretty significant and the extra space can be had using an external drive for a lot cheaper. Basically, the internal SSD is a professional speed device, you do not want to waste it by storing episodes of Sherlock and Beyonce Greatest Hits albums...

If however you're only using say 50GB of space, then the 256GB would be enough. An external HDD is fine and cheap, an SSD is better but only if you need the speed - I still use HDD for photo back-ups. But do consider it, if you are saving $510, an external SSD of 256GB could cost another $200, still saving $300, but would you pay that $300 not to have to find and use an external drive?

Thanks for your reply. Its good to know your experiences using Lightroom & Photoshop CC with the 2018 MBP. yeah I want to put that extra money towards some accessories purchases. This was one of the reasons I decided to try with MBP this time.

Agree with your points on the need for free space for working files. I do edit big RAW files by storing it the internal drives while processing them on LR & PS CC and then move out to external HDD for time being. Once I settle down on my system I will better organize my editing workflows. Currently in my windows notebook I use 1 TB drive & its nearly 75% full. On the Mac I need to get better organized with both external & internal storage. Thanks for your advice.

Yes, so you get a 4 year KB replacement warranty FREE. And no kernel crashes and speaker cracklings and excess heat.

Thanks again. I did not notice the above issues in my current 2018 MBP which I'm using. After today's update my MBP is running quite now .
