Got it and played with it for a few hours. Some quick thoughts:

  • The Australia/New Zealand region 85W power brick seems the same - aluminium connector socket. What's USA/EU like? iFixit teardown on 13in model showed redesigned brick.

  • Typing was not immediately quiet. Difference is there, but very subtle.

  • Still inconsistent sounds across the keyboard. Middle area is louder and snappier, outside edges usually quieter.

  • Redesigned space bar results in seeing the backlight when looking downwards at particular angle. Probably 20-30 degree field of view, starting from 10 degrees (assuming 0 degrees is your eyes directly over space bar).

  • Heard some coil while, which seems to be more than the 2017.

  • Siri voice feedback is nice, but damn is it ****.

  • iPhone on desk next to laptop, "hey siri" activates the phone for a split second. It seems to understand that Macbook > iphone though, and it stops.

I also feel as if Hey Siri could be improved. I've already turned it off on my iPhone, but now my Mac and HomePod both go off confuse themselves. Hopefully in the future Siri will somehow know which device to prioritize depending on the task.

With coming macOS and as Apple gets to evolve and fine tune the two beta OS (iOS 12 and macOS Mojave) the Hey Siri functionality should be improved. Apple is already prioritising the most recently used device to activate Hey Siri, so that is a direction and a start that I am fine with. Perhaps they will tweak some timings and internal communication between the devices for a better overall end user experience.

Perhaps, Siri will know better in the near future.
