I see a lot of people ordering this in the sticky thread. Isn't that a computer that is Completley wasted if your not doing some serious video editing?

Did not think I would see so many getting the maxed out one they carry in store like this.

Not completely wasted. Having 1TB is nice to have for anybody. Vega 20 is good for things like gaming and if you plan to connect multiple high res monitors or 6k. The only thing that might be wasted is 32 GB memory, but it won't be 100% wasted, since macOS uses all memory for caching.

With the technology today most could get a base 13" Touch Bar and do everything they need.

Its all a mental thing.

In that light. Why get the base touch bar? Most people can do everything they need and quickly on a $400 to $600 Windows laptop.

Heck, you can get refurbished laptops for under $300 which will do everything most people need a computer to do and still be pretty quick.

The comparison monetarily is not even remotely valid with your argument. The deviation in my examples are towards the sum of 2000+ dollars. Where as you are comparing 1799 to 800.

Another reason is that it IS carried in stores. So if there is an immediate manufacturing issue like stuck key, dead pixel, louder than normal coil whine / ssd whine, you can easily swap it out vs waiting another 7-10 days for a CTO arrival. It's almost like you are paying an extra $200 for that privilege because while 1tb or 32gb of ram might be an "easy" upgrade for some people, most don't need the 2.5% CPU increase but you don't have an option on that one with this maxed out config.

It aggravates me how inviting Apple has made it for people to just go "Im going to get the spec'd out BTO they carry in store".

Marketing geniuses man, everyone wants the best even if they do not need it. I am even guilty. I slapped my wrist within the return period though.

I was even at the point of looking for excuses to keep it. "What games could I get into", "maybe I should get into video editing now"....it's insane.

My main reason was for CAD and I came to grips with the fact MAC's are just not practical for CAD, specifically SolidWorks. This is just my example of course.

The ergonomics and design of the 13" is clearly superior to the 15". You look at a 13" and its design is appealing while the 15" just looks like a lot of wasted space. Wasted space Apple can do nothing about unless they lose the bezels allowing them to trim some material from the overall aspect ratio of the body/screen.

So you got the maxed out 13 they carry in-store 2.8/16/t1b? haha. ;)

Hahaha that is exactly what I did :)

I wasn't sure whether the i5 was enough for me blah blah, whether to go for silver or space grey blah blah...But as they only had the 13" i7 16GB 1TB in stock in space grey the choice was made easily :)

I bought a maxed-out early 2011 17” MBP in Feb 2011 and it is still running great, although it is no longer supported beyond High Sierra officially.

I thought I would get the highest spec laptop going about at the time because it would last a long time and I wouldn’t waste money with spec updates.

I’m happy with the choice I made. Once I see what if anything happens with the rumoured 16” MBP vs Surface Book 3 I will look at high spec options again.
