Hi all,

Need to ask a very basic question so please forgive me!

Have a new 2019 27inch iMac arriving next week and I plan to upgrade the ram on it. Have read lots of the threads on here about upgrading ram which has been really helpful.

One thing I’m picking up from things I’ve read is that you have to use ram in pairs that are the same.
I see a lot of single ram sticks for sale and also see a lot of two stick “kits” for sale.

Do I need to buy a 2 stick kit so I have exactly the same items, or am I ok ordering two single sticks of the exact same product and putting them together as a pair? (Is there something inherently different about the sticks sold in kits that make them matching pairs?)

I ask as want to buy two 32gb sticks/a 64gb kit.
In the UK I can only find a 64gb kit from Samsung.
But I’d prefer to buy Crucial ram, but can only find single sticks of 32gb

Basically do I have to get the Samsung kit or am I ok buying two single sticks of the crucial and putting them together?

Thanks all!

Update - I was mistaken with my ability to buy a 32gb crucial stick!

But my question stands on whether I have to buy a “kit” or can put two single products that are the same together as a pair?

You should be fine buying two identical modules and pairing them yourself. I just did the same with mine because of availability.
