I currently have a 2017 12” MB 1.3GHZ dual-core i5 with 8GB RAM and 512GB HD. I am looking at the 2019 MBA that Apple has refurbished on their web site (1.6GHz dual-core i5 with 8GB and 256GB HD). I primarily use my MB for Photoshop and Lightroom for photo editing, with light web browsing, email and iMessage sprinkled in between.

Am I better off just sticking with my current MB? Or would I see some improved performance if I went with the MBA?

Check here for benchmarks - https://browser.geekbench.com/mac-benchmarks

Or look at reviews of the two different models to get a sense of benchmarks and speeds.

Personally I’d suggest looking at the new 2020 model Air with the newer CPU. If price is an issue, consider the Education store -- or carry on as you are until they're available on the refurbished store later this year.

(and side note -- are you sure you'd do okay with less than half the storage?)

Appreciate the response. I store the majority of my RAW files on an external HDD, so downgrading won’t be an issue as I don’t use much space on my current MB HD and I utilize iCloud a lot as well.

I was looking at the 2020 MBA as well. My MB does okay handling LR and PS, so I could hold off until the 2020 models are available later this year refurbished.

FYI some campus bookstores will sell to alumni at the edu pricing - and honor the back to school promos. I was able to do that a couple years ago and not be charged sales tax since my undergrad college is in a different state. YMMV of course.

You can also get the education discount online. It doesn't ask for en edu email or proof of any kind
