Hi, I have a 2020 27” iMac 5K and did have an LG Ultrafine 5K monitor. The monitor is having issues, this seems to be the norm with this model. My question is what can I use to replace it and have the same quality of display as my iMac without having to spend $2000? Can I use a 2013 iMac as a secondary monitor? It has thunderbolt port, but is it compatible? I am told that any monitor would work, but I am not wanting to waste money to try. The resolution is very important to my work and the displays much match.

Thank you so much for any advise you may have.

So NO to the 2013... I now have a 2017 iMac, but now Apple has discontinued the ability to use one as a display? Has anyone been able to do this successfully?

If you want another one of those Ultrafine 5K monitors, there are sales regularly at the usual outlets.

See the 5K monitor thread in the Mac Accessories forum for long discussions on monitors.

Or you could just spend the $1499 for the ASD.

There’s the LG, there’s the Studio Display… those are the top two in that size & resolution with best compatibility to your Mac.

There are some “roll your own” 5K options using an older iMac, a soldering iron, and a lot of work… nothing I’m particularly interested in so haven’t paid much attention other than to skip past the threads on it.

My LG 5K is still working fine several years after getting it. I had to replace the Thunderbolt cable, and among my co-workers who also use the LG 5K that’s by far the most common issue. I’m not aware of any complete display failures among the ~20 of us.
