I am sure this has been discussed a few times, but who else is having the issue in Catalina 10.15.7 that when their iMac screen wakes from sleep that their colors are all washed out and just 'off'? You have to then go into display settings and choose another color profile and then back to your default color profile. What a PITA. Apparently this has been an ongoing issue over many versions of Catalina. Why does Apple ignore stuff like this?

5500 XT GPU here. Any solutions out there? Thanks!

Not a permanent solution but here’s something slightly less tedious than having to open the Displays preference pane every time. I’ve found that toggling True Tone on and off resets it to normal.

I’ve set up a keyboard shortcut mapped to True Tone in an app called One Switch so now I just press F6 twice after logging in.

It’s still annoying that this has been a thing for so long. I’ve filed an issue with Apple through the Feedback Assistant app and they requested a video of it happening. Haven’t heard back since I sent them one a few weeks ago.

I guess it would be highly unlikely this ever gets fixed in 10.15.7 then... It's really disappointing when Apple moves on to a new OS an abandons issues like this.

I sent the video in on Oct 29, which presumably would not have left enough time for a fix to make it into 10.15.7. But I really doubt I’m the first person to report it and I’ve found threads about similar issues happening months ago with the 16" MacBook Pro.

Hopefully, it’s something to do with both Catalina and new hardware (I’ve also got the 5500 XT), in which case a fix is still possible.

I can’t remember now but haven’t there been cases of point updates to previous OSs from Apple?

Yes Apple does point updates, but it is highly unlikely we will get a 10.15.8 Catalina. We may get a supplemental update, but I doubt it. They want everyone to move on to Big Sur. I can't because it will break compatibility with tons of plug-ins I use for audio production.

Same. Though I think it’s just Softube for me at this point.

Anyway I don’t think I’ve noticed this washed out thing since updating to the latest Security Update, have you?

I know they usually don’t do bug fixes in these but this one clearly touched more than security as it’s also added the startup chime to my Mac.

So I checked on my feedback to Apple and it now says

Resolution: Investigation complete – Works as currently designed

The video I sent them clearly showed the problem so this means that they either don't consider this a bug or it didn't make it to the right person.

An update: I disabled Automatically adjust brightness in System Preferences and this issue hasn’t happened since then (3–4 days now).

Even if this doesn’t solve this particular bug, there’s a noticeable improvement in the overall quality of the image. Deeper blacks, brighter whites, and overall improved color and contrast. I suspect this setting does more than adjust brightness and in my case whatever the smart thing it was trying to do was making things appear washed out, especially after waking the display.

Plus, if this setting is actually behind what we’re seeing, it would also make sense why Apple closed my feedback with the “works as designed” status.
