Well. Followed the M1 fun but nothing in stock in my country and the Apple site here is a bit poo.

So, there is a very good deal (couple of hundred pounds sterling off) base Macbook Pro 13 inch at the local authorised reseller. I am looking at it purely becuase it will be enough for me and I am now typing on a 2008 Macbook Unibody running Linux Mint..........................

So I am in a pickle as I now have three broken computers beyond economical repair.

What points me back to Intel Apple is I do still have quite a bit of software and I have been spending the last two days looking around at what is available and the screens on comparable Windows computers are always referred to as poor, dim and lack RGB coverage. I do basic photography and a good screen is very important, out and out power less so.

So. I am seriously considering pulling the trigger. I need a machine and don!t have a lot of cash to play with. Used is expensive and seem low on the value stakes locally at the moment. One day I can fit a new screen to the Elitebook but finding one is the problem.

With the new keyboard thez should be fine no? I am looking for 3 years and then see where M1 are. And save a bit more $ and not have to buy in a rush!

I’m a bit confused here. The late 2020 13” Base model is the M1. So I am correct in saying what you’re looking at is the earlier Intel model?

You say you can save a couple hundred pounds on that model; How big is the difference between the M1 though? I would personally get the M1 if I were you. The M1 Air even. Your software will most likely run perfectly fine through Rosetta

@jetsam1

I think I understand your issue. And Im sorta in the same boat. My 2015 battery finally gave up (expanded) and I took it out. So now on my way back to the states Im thinking of buying a new battery, but also a more modern machine. Im looking a the last 2020 13" MBP as well.

Heres my biggest thought. M1 is still new, and while it is VERY VERY interesting and promising... I will hang onto Intel for a little bit. I need a notebook I'm confident in as it keeps food on the table in my house.

Hope this helps.

I think I would like a few years with something that works and maybe later on go M1 when it gets into a iMac. I need something now really, and the price difference is quite something and the jump to the 2GB processors is huge. To stay with Mac for the screens needs a little compromise. I mean 8th Gen i5 will fly compared to what I have been running and that was good enough.

I think I would like to see M1 in a few further machines and be able to make the jump at a higher level in a couple of years.
