I have a MacBook Air purchased in 2020. It has the trackpad that doesn't physically click but vibrates to imitate a click.

Just today, the trackpad has started clicking very very softly. Both the regular click and force click are a lot softer than before.

- I have been to settings and confirmed that "click" is set to "firm". In fact the other settings are now even softer still - if I select "light" I can barely perceive the click.

- I have restarted the computer.

- I have connected the Magic Trackpad from my iMac and that is clicking fine when connected to the MBA. Does this suggest a hardware issue and not a software issue?

I have searched Google and the forums however couldn't find anyone with this specific issue.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what this may be, is it likely a hardware issue and I need to go to Apple?

Many thanks in advance.

Thanks for the suggestion, yes I have the issue with silent clicking off I'm afraid.

Also tried turning it on and off just to see but no difference sadly.

I just saw this post. Yeah, it's a year later and there's a faint vibration causing a sensation similar to static electricity. My current MacBook Air is a replacement for the original I bought. There were myriad issues leading up to it. As part of the troubleshooting procedures I performed, the hardware diagnostics test showed a defective trackpad/keyboard. After speaking with  support several times they replaced the original MacBook Air. While it seemed better initially, some of those same issues occurred on this one. Currently the trackpad is hyper-sensitive. I'm hoping there'll be a software fix for this.
