Right now I’m using a Mid 2012 15” Retina MBP and it is really starting to show it’s age. I originally planned to replace it with an iPad Pro which I proceeded to do. I’ve been using the 2020 iPad Pro since it came out and it’s amazing especially with the Magic Keyboard but I am beginning to realize that I still need a laptop for some things such as reformatting HDDs, upgrading the firmware on my camera, resetting peripherals to factory settings etc.

My first impulse is to just get the 13” Pro with the 10th gen i7, 32GB memory and the 1TB SSD but I don’t think I really need such an overpowered configuration especially considering the fact that I already have an iPad Pro and a pretty beefy Windows desktop so I only really need the laptop to do the things I can’t do on my iPad when I don’t have access to my desktop.

Comparing the configurations of the Air vs the Pro there is only a ~$350 difference between a maxed out Air(i7,16gb,2tb) and a Pro configured the same way. Even crazier is if you configure the Pro with (i7, 16gb, 1tb) it is actually $50 less than the Air. Now obviously if you drop the SSD on the Air to 1tb as well it’s even cheaper but I would really like to have at least 2tb since one of the main reasons I use a laptop is to store photos when traveling and it would be really nice to have enough storage so as not to have to bring any external SSDs.

Any thoughts?

I’d suggest going with the Ice Lake i5. Even the base at $1799 may be overkill for the tasks you describe, though it sounds like you want lots of storage, so consider the 1TB or 2TB models. The i7 isn’t much faster than the i5.

I really would like 2tb but Apple charges way too much for the storage upgrades. I’m probably just going to get 1tb no matter what computer I get since I can buy a 2tb external SSD for less than $400. I really am still leaning towards the Air since I already have the iPad Pro and from what I can tell the iPad is actually better for things like photo editing than even the MacBook Pros are. Also I know that the Pros are almost the exact same weight as the Airs but for some reason the Airs just seem much smaller and lighter.
