Our last "gen" ATV 4K worked perfectly, but I wanted the additional color / hdr support (plus I am a sucker for upgrades.)

The new ATV 4K has been nothing but trouble. Flakey hdmi connection, apps freezing up, you name it.

Anyone else experiencing such issues?

Which model: with or without Ethernet?

I'm getting Ethernet model tomorrow. Will see how it goes.

My question: what does one do with 128GB storage?

With ethernet (and using it.)

I guess you download lots of games?

That's what I would guess, but wondered what I might be missing.

Apparently there are some apps that let you store media. Not my use case, though.

No issues with apps or HDMI connections, I’ve had a few issues with remote disconnecting as others have reported. Even then the disconnects have been far between and are likely a software issue which will be fixed in a future update.

My ATV 4K 2022 with ethernet and 128GB is working fine too. But, the 2017 it replaced, and the 2022, both have a few crappy apps like Philo and YouTube that don't work well. That is a developer issue though, and by that I mean the Philo and YouTube developers do a lousy job with the tvOS 16 versions of their apps. Both work well on Fire TV and Android TV, but not in tvOS. But hardware-wise, the ATV 4K 2022 seems rock solid so far, but I don't do any gaming.

Ours has been doing the same. Blackouts while video streaming from a local server, to the extent that at one point, when the tv started displaying the Apple TV again, it was showing the screensaver while playing the audio from the streamed video.
Checked for updates, said there were none and we were on 16.1.1 so did the full reset and update. At that point it started to download and install some update it had just discovered, and then after installing it and doing a full reset I was still on 16.1.1.

However, we restarted the same video again and it played the remaining half flawlessly.

I guess the short story is “have you tried a full reset and update?” ;-)

I’m having blackouts with the Prime app, 128Gb version, with latest Beta update. So far not impressed.

The only issue I have is with hdr and my Sony. The new version (w/Ethernet) still cuts out but rarely compare to the previous gen

I will give that a try. Even the Apple TV app would freeze when opening movies, like just getting to the menu of a movie, not even starting playback.

Swapping back to our previous ATV fixed everything.

FWIW mines been nothing but issues as well since I upgraded, nothing changed in my setup either. Switched back to last gen and it's perfect again.

Clearly a hardware issue with these unless tvOS really is that unoptimized for the A15.

The only issue I've had with mine is getting it to play Disney plus. It worked for a few weeks after I got it then I started getting HDCP error. All other apps work no problem. Tried reboots and restarting the app but no luck. Then I bought a new HDMI cable and and connected it to another HDMI port on my TV. It worked for a few days and then stopped working. So I bought a fire HD stick to watch Disney+. The Fire TV would not work on any port on my TV. I have an older Fire TV stick that also never worked. So I bought a HDMI switch to see if I could get the fire TV stick to work if it's not plugged directly. The fire TV stick still did not work, however it seems to have solved the Disney plus issue for me. It's been almost a month now and the error has not come back. Apart from that I've not had any other issues.

I'm having issues with the remote. It keeps disconnecting . I have to get really close to the ATV for it to work or restart it. I'm already on my second unit. About to exchange yet again. :( what's going on Apple ?

This. I got my ethernet version the day it was released, and it was nothing but problems. Lag. Remote sound not always working. black screen. even updating it was problematic.

I didn't know if it was the hardware or software or both, so I bought a new one for my other TV (first one was past the point of returning). The second one worked flawlessly. I then took the first one, did a total reset to bare bones, and... voila. now it works flawlessly too. Yeah I know I should have tried that first.

I keep on having problems with my new ATV 4K 2022 (ethernet model), very latest tvOS.
About every day i need disconnecting the power for an hard reset.
I get frequent auto-close of apps (Netflix, Prime Video, Disney, ATV+,…) and even I cannot enter the configuration menu (!!). I select settings… it enters and exits immediately.
Even the remote sometimes disconnects.

How the hell this mess?!
PS. I’m using an 8K certified HDMI cable, connected to a Panasonic HZ2000.
