I am not accustomed to lumping the Apple crowd into the “good enough” category. We pay this thing called an Apple PREMIUM, presumably for something close to what that word means.

However, it is clearly an Apples to Oranges comparison so far. So if “good enough” is really what the Apple market wants, they can spend the cost of about 2 or 3 HPs for a cheap “5.1 home theater in a box” setup for “good enough. Example. That will still deliver true surround NOW vs hypothetical HP-based equivalent that Apple may never develop. It prob won’t be spectacular but well beyond “good enough” now. And I just selected that one based on ratings. One can go cheaper than that if they like. Example priced below 1 HP with better than 4-star rating.

Of course, this same “good enough” customer could choose PC over Mac, Android over iPhone, Fire tablet over iPad for cheaper “good enough” too. Instead, they pay up for “premium.”

Speakers tend to outlive all Apple tech offerings by 2X to 5X times. If there’s ever a thing in which to pay some premium based on useful life span, it’s speakers IMO.

If me, I wouldn’t buy either example and instead put Apple-type money into a system I expect to enjoy for 10-30 years. But if “good enough” actually applies, there are abundant offerings in that end of this pond for little cost.

DTS would be the biggest addition for me. The movie files would need it added, but this should be pretty straight forward. With gigabit internet lossless would seem to be the next step on the audio side of the house, but I’ll take DTS/DTS-X at this point. Watching movies that have a DTS/DTS-X master with DD 5.1/7.1 in iTunes kinda sucks.

if Disney can do it on their app in the not too distant future, there is no reason Apple can’t.

For all of you Ethernet haters, I rather have a solid 1G connection (and I do have a symmetrical one) than a crowded unreliable wifi. Gimme a 2.5G (heck 10G even better) and I'm floating... But I'll settle for 6Ghz.

If you have crowded, unreliable Wi-Fi, then you haven't configured it well. As simple as that. I quite like my 1200Mbps bidirectional without wires. It is plenty for any kind of UHD streaming on any device. Did I mention no wires yet?

Would love to see a SD slot for the ability to play content on the SD.
Just add a usb c port to connect an SSD with the ability to play your own media, better still add an internal SSD and store media on that, just like the original ATV.

Touché. Still, running an eth cable still greatly outpaces any perfectly configured wifi. But it's true I haven't actually tested the practical vs theoretical max wifi speed of my latest appletv. Simply based on experience of other hardware where wifi is often capped at low speeds, while eth is rarely capped at the 100mbps level.

seems to me these :apple:tv do not need the
the…
that port we used to reach the internets in the late 90s?
ummm
whats that thin yello or grey rope with plastic cat rg7 plug called again?
It's called ethernet and yes it's very much needed. 3 of my 5 ATV's use it. You must not have a smart house

Have it configured perfectly. You must not have very many devices. 3 of my 5 ATV's use ethernet. I keep as much off my wifi as possible

Currently I’m using DIRECTV and want it gone asap. Whether it be the new version of AppleTV or the new ROKU Ultra, whichever comes out first gets my money.
I have both and detest Roku with a passion. The OS on roku is from the 90's I'm pretty sure. Works fine but still looks the same as 15 years ago. ATV 4K running IOS 26 on the other hand looks awesome on my 4K tv

I've got a smart house, in one the Tx rate is 950Mbps per client. The other home I have even better WiFi. It really isn't needed with a well configured network.

My firewalla tells me 52 devices, most IoT. But keeping stuff eth backhauled by default was my original point. Wifi is great when it works, but eth is still more reliable. And for my point up, I backhauled all main media access points and APs after years of having annoying loading or slow local media access (eg 4k videos) even while trying always to buy the best. After etherneting everything relevant I managed to stop most issues.

2 years on from when this thread first started we are still nowhere with this new device-still just rumours with no concrete evidence to suggest one is actually coming.

I would like to see true multi-user functionality. However, this is more of a software feature. At most, authentication—which should be active when selecting the user—could be simplified via fingerprint or similar technology.

Wha is hilarious people always want all these things added then want the price lowered.

We don't want the price lowered,we want this, and some of taht, and all of taht and none of that, and want if for free. And it will all change tomorrow....
