iPod how do i make my ipod into a playlist

i want to have a playlist in my itunes for my ipod so that i can just auto-update my ipod from the playlist this way my ipod would be a bit easier to manually manage. but heres the deal, i dont want to have to start over on gather music that i want on my ipod, so is there anyway i can tell itunes to make you current ipod into a playlist. i dont think this is even possible but i would like to know if anyone has any ideas or thoughts.

second, i have the greatest ipod ever made, last night i just dropped my ipod from my lofted bed down onto essentially a concrete floor, i have a dent in the back of it from who knows when, i crunched the screen so now i have perminant color disfigurements, theres more that ive done to it but i wont mention it all. all that and it still plays like a dream. i think anyone that puts there ipod into a case or stupid sock is not worthy to own one. ipods look sweet in themselves and why would anyone want to cover up and hide its beautiful achitectual engineering. also, ive got scratches all over my ipod, scratches just show character, its like brushed metal, it looks good. people need to realize that they cant try and shelter their ipods from every little thing. if youre covering up your ipod so you'll have a better resale, you too are not worthy to own an ipod. if youre trying to protect your 400$ investment by covering it up, then i ask you why, why not show off youre 400$ investment.

EDIT: You can delete album art off your ipod by deleting it from your iTunes (Get the songs' info, ->artwork, delete) and then plug in your ipod.

I think I get what he's trying to say. But yeah, this is a crazy thread...

He wants to continue to manage the content between iTunes and his iPod manually, but in order to make it easier, he wants a playlist in iTunes that contains the content of his iPod. When he updates manually, he'll simply be able to update the iPod against the content of that one playlist.

Not only that, but he doesn't want to have to start making this playlist from scratch - wants to include the current content of his iPod in this playlist.

Bordenketcher - I think making a playlist in iTunes with the current content of the iPod is probably easy - you need an app / utility that will copy / back up the contents of your iPod to your harddisk. (There are some free ones out there, they've been mentioned in other threads - do a search. I use PodUtility, but that's not free anymore.) Use the app to back up your tunes to a file on your computer, then drag the content into the new playlist you've made in iTunes.

You can set iTunes to update only certain playlists automatically, I think you do this in the iTunes iPod prefs (plug your iPod into your computer to enable the iPod prefs in iTunes). Then you can update that one playlist. If you don't have any specific playlist system on your iPod other than the default, this should work. I THINK.

If anyone else sees something I've misunderstood, they'll probably post and say so.

thanks for the thought though, and no, i really dont care about album art on my ipod. its only a 4gen, its a rockstar.

and sorry to go all nuts w/ people protecting their ipods, im just trying to make an arguement. hopefully you know what i was getting at, if not, read the article, if you can find it, about there being a 30 foot scratch on the new able flagship store. a little bit different of an arguement, but about the same.

I don't know if there's an app that will make a playlist in iTunes directly from your iPod, but using an iPod back-up app and dragging the contents of the file into a newly-made playlist in your iTunes, is not really a lot of extra work. Then you'd have the playlist you want, without having to go through 40 gigs of music.

I'm probably oversimplifying this: why can't he create a new playlist out of the entire iTunes Library?

Select All>File>New Playlist from Selection

Then set the iPod to manually update from that playlist.

I'm fooling around with PodUtility now, backing up a few tunes to a folder I'm trying to make in iTunes - I can specify all the tunes on my iPod, and specify the folder to which I want them copied. I tried choosing "new" and creating a new iPod synch folder in Music - iTunes, but so far I can't find that folder I've created in iTunes. If I can get it to work, then he'll have his answer.

Edit: Sigh, nope, can't get it to work. I see the new folder I've created in Music - iTunes - iTunes Library, and the content is there, but I can't get the folder to show up in the folder system in iTunes.

For manually managing songs I am not entirely sure how it would work (I haven't done it) but I would think that you could just drag the on the go playlist from the iPod into iTunes.

its a thought, i dont have my ipod cable with me right now, but by doing this youre saying i will have the ability to drag "on-the-go" playlist off my ipod, im not sure that is true since i cant drag regular playlist off my ipod. but if someone has they're cable and ipod and mac with them and would like to test this for me that would be wonderful thanks.

However, if your iPod is set to update automatically it should copy the on the go playlist into iTunes. However, I am unfamiliar with what happens when there is more music on your computer than your iPod can hold and you choose automatic update. I don't know if this would mess up what is already there or not.

You can choose only to update certain playlists automatically (in the iPod prefs in iTunes).

i dont think is gonna happen, i give up. ill just have to sit down sometime, if i really want this, and go back through and build an ipod playlist. thanks for everyones input.

don't worry, i had to redo all my playlists recently and though i gave up after about 10 gig (the others i assumed i don't listen to right) it probably only took me an hour. i think...
