Will try to keep it brief but informative :)

iPod works normally except that one out of every 10 or so power ups, I get the folder with exclamation.

When I plug it in via USB to either Mac or PC, it says "do not disconnect" but does not mount to the computer. I have tried putting the iPod in disk mode but the outcome is the same.
Both the Mac and PC work fine with the iPod plugged in except any application that would access the iPod (itunes, explorer, finder, etc) hangs until I unplug it.

I've tried different USB ports on both computers as well as a different transfer cable.

I can hear the HDD in the iPod accessing data like it normally sounds while it is plugged in :\

Anything I can do or is it dead?

My computer recently died and all my music is on this iPod and I would REALLY like to get my data off so if someone has even just a solution for that, I would be very appreciative!

arg.
Time to face that reality I guess...

Was just hoping that since the iPod is fully functional there would be something I could do

Update: Divine Intervention

Just as I was reaching to unplug the thing and toss it out, disk utility suddenly sees the volume.
Running a repair. Will update with results :D
