For the past few days, the 21.5-inch 4K iMac with either 512GB or 1TB of SSD storage configuration has been unavailable for order on Apple's website. Other configurations, such as the lowest-end 256GB SSD option or 1TB Fusion Drive storage option remain available, however.

While there are rumors of an updated iMac launching this year, the current lack of availability for the higher-end storage options is likely due to a component shortage rather than a sign of an imminent launch. Both the 512GB and 1TB SSD storage options are popular upgrade items as well, which makes for a significant inconvenience for buyers looking to purchase an iMac right now.

Timing for a launch of the redesigned iMac remains unclear, so we'll have to hold tight to see whether we get an update or Apple's component shortage is resolved for the current models. It's quite rare for Mac configurations to be completely unavailable for ordering, with Apple usually just pushing shipping estimates out significantly in cases of component shortages or stock drawdowns ahead of updates.

Please please please please please please please please please please please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I need an iMac. I love my iPad Pro, but it’s just not cutting it. And my 2016 MacBook Pro had to go, because it took like 3 1/2 minutes just to login and get the thing started.
so I refuse to buy the iMac 21.5 inch that was last updated almost 2 years ago, and is using years old Intel processors.
So please, keep the same design if you have to, and just stick a regular M1 in there for now, but I just need some kind of upgrade.

Yeah I expect more a configuration shortage rather than Apple stopping production in preparation for a new model release. Doubly so since we're hearing there will not be an Apple event within the next few weeks.

And even if Apple was planning an imminent new model launch, they might still keep the old one around just to fill any "last call" orders from commercial customers.

I also suspect that we will see an increasing number of leaks preceding the launch. If this were actually imminent, I think we'd know more than we do––about both the iMacs, and the secondary displays that they are rumoured to be developing alongside. My gut says WWDC.

Get a Mac Mini and a screen instead.

Very likely, chipageddon is at fault. Hope this improves soon.
Soon - if you follow semi, it takes 3-6 months to make a chip, so eg automotive will have to wait that long to improve.
Apple is smarter than that so I expect shorter “recovery”
But in general, there will be a Vortage in the <10nm space coming up, it takes 2-3 years and $10B+ to build a new fab, but Apple apparently secured their supply thru 2024 already...

Wow ... how to make a cruddy "out of date" computer more "out of date"? Strip it of full blown SSD options with reasonable space. That's how you do it! Might as well donate those other machines to charity.

I've thought about this, but it's hard to find a screen with decent speakers built in that actually looks good cosmetically. I do IT for a retail store and I refuse to put black plastic monitors up for our POS terminals.
Benq does some decent ones. And the Asus ProArt range is pretty reasonably put together too.

My thoughts EXACTLY!

well let’s see.
The Mac mini would probably end up being about $1000 once I factor in upgrades and taxes.
then I don’t have an Apple keyboard, or any keyboard at all, so that’s about another 130 bucks.
The magic trackpad is another 130 bucks.
A nice set of speakers is probably another hundred dollars.
A nice Display is probably another thousand dollars or so.
Before you know it, I’m close to $2500, with a messy and complicated set up, with Limited I/O.
webcam is another $100.

Same in Denmark. Unavailable. That is drastic. It usually estimates delivery time even if it is many weeks. It might be the 24 inch in happy colors and an M1X = iMac Air.

This may be a silly question...but would the 27-inch model not use the same 512gb SSD? Surely it's not physically smaller.

When Apple does launch new products, there's usually a window to return recent orders. It's possible they're going unavailable on the higher end options for that window to avoid returns of the higher-end products.

Plus supply chain issues.
