The 27" obviously gets many of its components from the 27" iMac. So I wonder if they'll make a 21.5" version using components from the 21.5" iMac.

I would love a 27", but I just don't have that much room on my desk. The 21.5" would be great. Plus a lower price of, say, $499 or $599 would hurt a lot less.

Do you think Apple might make a 21.5" Thunderbolt display?

Rob

Unlikely, they never released a 21.5" LED display either. Apple have very little interest in the monitor market these days, except for the very large screens.

I'd have to second this. If anything, and I doubt this as well, I could see Apple releasing a 24" Thunderbolt display, since they had previously made a display this size.

Still, even if they did release a 21.5" display, I couldn't help but ask "why bother?" The 27" panel has an advantage on the display market because of its 1440p resolution and added ports, but the 21.5" panel is only 1080p. Even at a price point of $499, I'd say the display would be too costly when other 1080p LED displays of similar size can be had for half the cost. The only advantage the 21.5" display would have is that it has the extra peripheral ports on it, but even then its scope of use is limited for a regular display (since you can only use it with thunderbolt, as of now Apple, products).

Not gonna happen for other sizes. Too bad there is no 24" TB display. That res would be better for me since I'm constantly enlarging text on the 27". I would buy two 24" TB displays.

24" would be the ideal size, maybe with the same amount of pixels as the 27". Now that would be something I would buy.

24" won't happen either, as Apple no longer use 24" panels in their supply chain (used to be in both iMacs and displays).

obsidian1200 is also perfectly correct that Apple would struggle to compete in a market flooded with 1080p displays.

The 21.5" would do 1920x1200 like the 17" MBP. Plus it'd be nice to match up to the 17" so both displays are the same resolution.

IMO the Apple displays are so vastly superior to any other that I sure wish they'd offer a wider variety. I have a fairly nice Dell 21.5" now and I tried briefly to use it as my primary display, and just couldn't deal with it. My 17" MBP display is 10x better in clarity and color quality. That's what has gotten me thinking about getting an Apple display.

I guess I'll figure out how to fit the 27" on my desk.

They wouldn't match the MBP, it's a 17" panel. It would be identical to the one in the 21.5" iMac, same as the 27" is the same between display/iMac, so 1920x1080.
