Apple Seeds Fifth Beta of iOS 11.4.1 to Developers and Public Beta Testers

Apple today seeded the fifth beta of an upcoming iOS 11.4.1 update to developers, one week after seeding the fourth beta and over a month after releasing iOS 11.4, an update that introduced AirPlay 2 and Messages in iCloud.

Registered developers can download the new iOS 11.4.1 beta from Apple's Developer Center or over-the-air once the proper configuration profile has been installed from the Developer Center. Public beta testers can get the beta over-the-air once the proper profile has been installed from Apple's beta testing website.

No new features were discovered in the first four iOS 11.4.1 betas, suggesting it focuses on bug fixes and performance improvements to address issues discovered since the release of iOS 11.4.

We'll update this post should we discover any new features in the fifth iOS 11.4.1 beta, but we're not expecting major changes now that Apple has shifted its focus to iOS 12, which is also available to developers for beta testing purposes.

I have found 11.4.1 to be one of the most buggy late-stage betas from iOS I have seen (running an SE). I hope the fifth is better.

10.3.3 had 6 betas so not really surprising since most likely its the last iOS 11.x.x update.

It would be interesting to calculate the total level of extra power used in the world by all of that extra charging needed because of the battery drain bug in 11.4.

Hopefully today will be a last minute check with tomorrow seeing the final release.

Beta 1-3 weren't bad IMO, but Beta 4 was definitely kind of buggy. Hopefully Beta 5 is better.

Genuine question. With the release of iOS12 less than 3 months away,and with no device being left on 11 as it was announced all those that could run 11, could run 12, why do Apple continue to work on 11, rather than have all their software experts concentrate on 12?

I can understand it with watch OS4, as the original gen watch won’t get 5, but surely if Apple really wants to concentrate on reliability, shouldn’t they just concentrate on getting 12 as near perfect as possible?

Because until iOS 12 is released to the public, the large majority of the worlds iOS devices will continue to run iOS 11, and so it wouldn't make sense for Apple to drop support for it. There are still some months left before iOS 12 is released.

Donno. My guess it has something to do with cleaning code up for the iOS 12 upgrade of which talking about in this thread gets you mast notes from really bored moderators.

This wouldn't make any sense. Apple forked the iOS 12 codebase already.

That makes sense. Unfortunately that can be the cost of progress in anything, whilst trying to improve something, you break something else.

We're only on beta 5, this is pretty typical. When we get to beta 7 or 8 then I'll agree with you.

In addition to everyone but beta testers being on iOS 11.x until at least September, it’s also true that millions won’t upgrade to iOS 12 until months after its release. Many iPhone users are not techies and don’t pay a ton of attention to what features or bugs are added to the latest iOS. My parents didn’t update from 10.3.3 to 11 until Thanksgiving last year (I know this because I updated both their phones when I went home for the holiday). They were vaguely aware there was a new iOS but weren’t much paying attention.

Also, some people wait to install a major new release until the X.1 version of it, or at least the X.0.2 version, since the X.0 release is likely to have glitches.

So I’m happy that Apple is trying to get the best possible version of iOS 11 ready for the masses that will be using it for at least 2.5 months and possibly longer.

I’m imagining the current iOS release live team employees in a latter day Hitchcock movie, constantly seeing the the numeral ‘11’ wherever they go, until they go crazy.

Then a few years later...

‘iOS 11? Oh no, you must be mistaken. There was never an iOS 11. They skipped straight from 10 to 12. No one knows why - and if I were you I wouldn’t keep on asking questions about it!’

Sorry you and others have had so many problems with iOS 11. For me, it’s worked really well on iPad, iPhone 7 Plus, and iPhone X. It’s added cool features that I’ve found really useful.

That said, I too am looking forward to 12 and Apple’s new focus on speed and stability.
