Uninstalling GarageBand

Hey all, I've just installed Garageband on my Macbook by mistake (don't ask) and I want to remove it, and all the associated junk that comes with it, without taking all of iLife off. Just don't need the use of it 🙂

However if anyone can also recommend a very simple recording program I could use for dictation it'd be much appreciated 🙂

EDIT: And how can I get rid of the uneccsary language files and templates? I remember seeing something about this option on these forums but darned if I can find it now!
 
Try WireTap Pro for simple recording.

To remove GB, just trash:

/Applications/GarageBand.app
/Library/Application Support/GarageBand/
/Library/Documentation/GarageBand/
 
Audacity is also very easy to use and free.

I've got on well with it for podcasts, dictation and basic music editing.

And as said, with garage band just drop it in the trash and do a spotlight search for any associated files that remain.

And /Library/Audio/Apple Loops/Apple/GarageBand Loops (I think that's the name - I've removed Garageband myself so I'm going by memory, but there's GarageBand in the name of the directory)

Ah.. quite right.. you were very close, not a bad memory! 🙂

The correct path is:

/Library/Audio/Apple Loops/Apple/Apple Loops for GarageBand/
 
I love Garageband, and I have all 5 Jam Packs...=a ton of SPACE!!

My biggest complaint with OS X is that you can't put your Jampacks and EXSP Instruments on an external drive, and point the file to the main HD with a shortcut....I swear, half my main HD is taken up by jam packs....

You can, you just have to do it post-install.

You're kidding me.....

Are you sure about that??

I'll feel very stupid if that's true...can I uninstall my jampacks? Or do I have to manually drag all the files to the trash...?

"Post-install" means "after the install." 🙂

Just drag the JamPack folders to an external drive, delete them from the system drive, use Finder to create an alias to each of the folders you just dragged onto the external drive, move them to the original position on the system drive, and rename them to match the orignal names (meaning, remove the " alias" from the end).

Hope that makes sense.

I asked that question before and was told it wasn't possible....

So, thanks for the heads up!

Done, and done,

And it was really simple, and I'm embarassed for not doing this months ago..

I have Stylus RMX, and in that you can do the same thing, put your SAGE expanders on an external drive, and then just Command+option drag to the main HD folder for the shortcut...

For the Jampacks, it was the same thing...After I did it, I opened up G band, and it said, "loop could not be found ect...do you want to reindex loops?" and I did that, sure enough, all my loops were found, and work perfect..Saved me 15 GIGS on my Main HD !!! w00t !!

Also, Logic now finds all my loops too...w00t pt. II !!!

Next question...

The exsp 24 instruments....can those be done the same? I have a feeling that they won't be...

Plus, those are all in one single folder HD>library>garageband>Sample files...

But, whatever 15 gigs back !! so great..

I can't think of any reason why it wouldn't work.
 
monolingual is another good app to get rid of language files/architectures you dont need.

freed up a few gigs fo me 😉
