Last year I bought the base model macbook pro the day it came out. I would now like to buy an external display and mouse keyboard combo. I can get a 23" ACD 2nd hand plus brand new apple mouse and keyboard for AU$950 or I can get the new 24" apple display brand new and apple mouse and keyboard new for AU$1450. Do you think its worth the extra $500 for the new display?

It's worth it if you think it's worth it. It's worth it if you like glossy. It's worth it if you want a newer H-IPS.
well I was also thinking about resale value as well, because I finish school at the end of this year and If I end up going traveling I would most likely sell it.
