hey all,
I have been looking for a bag i can put my macbook in (it will be in a sleeve (anti-shock sleeve from ebay)) and still put my text books in. Something i can take to class with me, with a laptop, textbook or two and a clip board, and on occasion binder.. I think this one does the trick for 55$ and the separte padded laptop sleeve..

What do you guys think?

is there a picture of the laptop sleeve?

the colors and design are not that great. but hey, it's 55 bucks. much cheapter than crumpler bags.

I bought my crumpler bags for 140.

hahaa 'not that great'
well its got some plaid, so thats hit or miss. I like it haha

the sleeve is just black.. i'll see what i can dig up, and this bag will hold my skateboard as well..:D

basic black, anti-shock (if its not, then at least it wont scratch it) -19$

sooo i think it was all satisfying!

i used to carry my toshiba laptop in a sleeve and a regular backpack. it was a bad idea as it started to fall apart (if you didn't know, toshiba's are pretty high quality laptops). my suggestion is to get a backpack with a designed laptop compartment. sure it may be pricey (although i can offer you a very affordable one that i use and 3 of my friends and family have based on my recommendation), but it's well worth it. this is the one i have...

i got mine on sale at rei for 45 bucks. it's no longer that price on their site, but if you froogle it, you can find some reputable dealers that have this bag. its a high quality bag with a great compartment for my ibook when i had it and my current macbook.

hey that's the bag I use! only in black and grey.. bought it a year ago from backcountry.com and use it with my 15" powerbook and everything in between. I think I paid a little less than $55 though. Not super padded, but I haven't had any problems. If you add a sleeve you should be good if you are worried

Are convinced that you want a regular backpack?

I have a BaileyWorks messenger and love the construction and quality. I know messengers aren't for everyone, but I find it's great for taking the streetcar to school, bike riding, or walking around campus as it's much easier to access.

I use a Tom Bihn sleeve and the messenger daily and have seen no ill effects to my notebook.

At least it isn't boring. It's rather cool. I like it. It's a bit out there, especially for the typical MacRumours crowd who likes things just plain white, aluminium, minimalist, etc.

I have this bag in red and grey. MEC Darwin Daypack. Note that this is the Canadian price. ;)

It's great, but the laptop compartment doesn't offer incredible protection. It's still quite good, I guess. The back of the pack is hard anyway, and the laptop compartment doesn't touch the bottom of the backpack at all, so no worries there. I guess the back being well padded is the most important thing. With a good sleeve, it's the perfect backpack.

The front meshy bit is rather good at holding wet towels, clothes, shoes, and even a water bottle quite well.

Well, perhaps i didnt mention but this is designed to hold a laptop. Surprise!
It has a compartment that sits directly against ones back pretty much. I cant see it being super awesome like a 'built only for a laptop bag' but its better then a normal backpack. So i got the sleeve, and i figure i can just put like a golf towel at the bottem of the laptop compartment to protect the bottem of my macbook when i put the back down. :)

And to crazydreaming : That is awesome! i got mine from Bigwinds.com, i wasnt sure if 1660cu. inches was big enough sooo is it big enough for a laptop, and some text books and a notebook or two? And, is their any bottem protection for the laptop when you put the bag down? (will my macbook impact the ground?)

Thanks! after the first reply i started thinking this might be a bit out there for this crowd hahaha. This colour scheme was actually sold out at about the first 5 sites i tried so some people enjoy it ;)

thanks Stardestroyer - I think it's safe to say our paths won't cross :)

Have a look at this ones from Booqbag, there you can find backpacks, sleeves, messengers,...

They are a bit expensive but, believe me, it's worth it.

Thanks for the booq link too - I had had a look at them - and they are great bags and look well put together - but b/c I'm purchasing a radtech mactruck (around US$200) to house my portable - I won't be able to stretch the budget to higher end backpack.

I'm also interested in not standing out with 'an expensive' looking bag also (however I'm not saying that your bag looks cheap stardestroyer - but it doesn't scream 'notebook inside') which is what I want also.

I bought a Brenhaven Satchel Bag for my MacBook. I get compliments on it all the time, and even more complements when I slip my slim, beautiful MacBook out of it!

Yeah, i understand. I dont want to look like i have a 1500$ computer inside my bag. Thats how you get mugged on the bus ride through downtown at 10pm after your night class ;)

Soo...yarrrrr hahaha
I ordered it, and i will let you all know how it works out when it come, hopefully sometime next week the sleeve and bag will be here!

I wouldn't be caught dead with that (I don't look good with any plaid) but nonetheless the backpack looks all right. And pending on how you dress, it can look pretty nice. For $55, it's a good deal too.

Pending on how many books you have, whether or not you like messengers, and if you want an alternative, you might want to look at Brenthaven too. I think they're around the same price range and they offer great protection.

Well how i dress eh..
Mostly black T-shirt and jeans, I am a skateboarder, sooo i have that whole skate/ska style thing happening with the thick framed black glasses and longer hair.. haha So it should fit my style, i mean i picked it out, so it has to work or i wouldnt have picked it eh?

I would say it fits my style, and my last backpack broke after a year due to too many books in it.. So i will be careful with this one!

UPDATE!

Well after a while of waiting (the bag was not in stock) i finally ordered the exact bag (brown and fairway plaid its called)from bigwinds.com. Everyone knows what that means!? REVIEW TIME!

To start, i am currently using a Macbook 1.83ghz, 60GB, 1GB RAM. I use an older iPod Nano, black, 1GB in an Incase flip case (very nice, its black and green, from Best buy).

Upon placing the order for the aforementioned sleeve (black, neoprene, anti-shock sleeve) i was skeptical, only because it was coming off ebay. It arrived, with a 'run' in it, much like what happends to stockings, but after some threads and testing i concluded it has no effect on the performance and kept it (i did get a full refund from the seller, AND got to keep the sleeve as well as getting positive feedback). My macbook slides into that sleeve nicely, and usually stays in it all during use. The heat stays under 60C for hours on end during the day, under student school uses.
The sleeve is excellent, the foam is firm to the touch but can be depressed to absorb impacts from bumps and things moving around in the backpack easily. Its excellent in that department. It has a very large zipper cover, made of an elastic-y material that protects the macbook from zipper scratches. The sleeve looks great, works awesome and ended up being free. I love it, and recommend it if anyone wants an anti-shock sleeve for the macbook. It does however, have excess room and does not provide a tight fit, but i cannot see how that would be a negative (i doubt it slides, and i cant see how would scratch it, the material in general doesnt scratch)...?

The backpack, as seen in above posts is the best part. I have gotten numerous compliments from many people! If it helps i am a university student, i skateboard and sing in a band.. that will give ya the kind of people i spend time with. BUT..
The bag HAS a laptop compartment, which is actually completely separate from the 'book' part. It is located directly against the wearers back, and has a reasonable amount of padding between the laptop part and the persons back. The padding between the books and the computer is slightly less, but in a sleeve it is more then enough. The macbook and sleeve fit snugly in this compartment, and this laptop compartment actually has a flap that is attached to inside of the zipper to almost wrap the laptop with a padded 'blanket' that protects it from zipper scratches if not in a case.
The bag has excellent zippers that feel strong and will not appear to break for years. The bag is not as 'fat' as many bags i have seen it still fits my laptop in a sleeve in one compartment, and at 2 concrete design textbooks (easily 1000 pages each, hardcover) as well as a pencil case, clipboard with some papers, all in the other compartment.
In total it has one 'book' compartment, and one padded laptop compartment (which has padded on the bottom, so your laptop doesnt get bumped when you put the bag down).
It has a top pouch that is lined with a super soft fur type material, designed to hold glasses. I mostly carry my watch in it, my iPod, and my glasses in a case, with room to spare. It has 2 other pockets that can hold cords and CD's, cell phone, snacks, pens.. or little things like that, usually i only use one pocket while the other goes empty.
It has side pockets that do a great job of holding bottles, keys.. or anything else you wish to toss into them. They are not all mesh so there is no fear of them ripping.

The bag and sleeve are excellent, i have no regrets and they cost me in total, all together 80$ American. They work superbly and look very stylish. The bag i believe is roughly 27litres (1600cu inches) and hold my macbook as well as all my books for the day, while feeling very comfortable on my shoulders. The straps seem to be more of a gel like material then a classic 'padding' but are comfortable non the less.. I recommend this combination to anyone looking for a sleeve and bag for their laptops. The bag looks to able to fit the new macbooks and Pros, i would however, doubt that any 17 inch laptop could fit.. sorry..

I hope this helps, and wasnt tooo much of a struggle to read, its early and i am still tired. Besides i am in engineering, not english :)

Cheers!
Star.

Large Backpack Option

I just ordered the Axio softcase backback (www.axio.com). It comes with a 17" sleeve for my MBP (neither the backpack or the computer has shown up yet... Apple is torturing me by sending the extra battery first...). If you want something big this is the one for you. It also comes with a vertical sleeve that's removeable.

Have a look at this ones from Booqbag, there you can find backpacks, sleeves, messengers,...

www.booqbag.com

They are a bit expensive but, believe me, it's worth it.

I have to agree on the Booqbags. I have spent numerous hours searching high and low for the finest quality laptop bag. In the end, I found that the Booqbags were the best designed and looked like they would be the most versatile bag for me. I bought the Folee XL [system] for my new 17" MacBook Pro :D

http://booqbags.com/s.nl/it.A/id.227/.f?sc=2&category=3

But If you already have a good quality bag on the go, then you're all set.

Booq Python XM, black

Ok - so I've done a pretty exhaustive search of laptops bags - cases, in general I typically go crazy researching - and I'm on the order page for a Booq Python XM. I can't bring myself to click the 'submit' button to justify the price.. I did find a link for 10% off, so it helps - but they also charge shipping, so it essentially negates the discount.

For the last year I've been using a cheap Targus bag and the main reason is because I haven't been able to find anything I like good enough to replace it. (But its starting to get a bit worn, and I might as well get something nice for my MBP thats on the way).

Anyway - my ideal bad would be something not too big, but allow me to fit in 2 laptops. My MBP which I carry back and forth to work every day, and then on weekends I typically take my work laptop home with me - a Thinkpad Z60. Does the Python have room for a 2nd laptop? (I wouldn't want it in the laptop area w/ my beautiful MBP, I currently put my work computer in the accordian file area - I don't care if it gets beat up. :)

Also - another criteria is pockets - which the Booq seems to have plenty of. Power Supply. Misc cables (LAN, Modem, crossover, audio), laptop lock, iPod (on occasion) - it all looks like it'll fit in there - and each have its own space - which i LOVE. (Right now, I have little pouches for everything and they sit in the main compartment of my Targus - neat and clean, but not perfect.)

Anyway - does the pricetag justify the purchase? (I think right now, my biggest question is the ability to hold 2 laptops.. if it doesn't - I can't get it, especially not at that price!)...

Convince me.. :) Someone? Pictures would be great too if possible (I saw the ones on the website, but the more the better!)

Booqbag

I just received (10 minutes ago) a Python XL for my new 17" MacBook Pro. The only problem is that I don't have a computer yet to put in it ... :(

I had a booqbag for my last powerbook and never had a problem with it and loved it. The only reason I bought a new bag is the crazy reasoning that my new laptop would need a new bag...so I sold the booqbag on ebay and now I have the new one.
