Would it be possible for Apple to release a 24 GB iTouch? Would it be beneficial to them? Why or why not?

Never going to happen, ever. It's impossible. Flash doubles.. 1GB, 2GB, 4GB, 8GB..and so on.

But they use 8 GB chips right? Why not stick 3 in there instead of 2 or 4?

Technically, I am sure it is possible. Marketing wise though it is not something Apple would want to do. Doubling (at least) the size is much easier to sell for upgraders. So, I imagine the next bump will be 16gb and 32gb. Also, it is not cost effective to have more than a couple versions.

Of course, I may be completely wrong.

It would have to be thicker than the current offerings because you would be putting 3 flash chips inside instead of just one. I could assume the pice would be a little higher since it's using more flash chips, or at least Apple wouldn't like it because the profit margins on it would be lower than they'd want. In a year there will be a 32GB touch I'm sure though.

We'll never see a 24. Once the prices of flash chips and SSDs go down, we will definitely see higher-capacity (32GB+) iPhones and iTouches.

its not impossible you could use 2 12gb sticks and yes 12gb flash exists.
but we will most likely see the 8 dropped and the high end be 32 with the low end 16.

heyy... asked my dad about this, who sells ddr and flash drives to garmin and samsung. He said that a 32gb Touch would push the price up maybe a hundred dollars... so, :apple: is right again

I read that the 8GB chips cost about $70 each, thus the $100 price difference in the two available models, and a possible $200 difference if they released a 32GB tomorrow. Don't know that I'd be willing to pay $599 for a 32GB Touch though..

Take a look at the iPod Touch disassembly photos on iFixIt.com.

You can easily see that there is no physical space to add any additional flash modules.

These modules can well be replaced with higher capacity ones in the future (which we can all safely assume that this will happen eventually), but as of now, I don't foresee anything greater than a 16gb iPt without retooling from a manufacturing perspective.
